Even If I Don’t Believe, I Must

Even in this world,
by darkness,
and let downs,
I have to believe
a ray of light
will break through
the protective,
steel shell
I welded
in despair
around my dreams,
that hope
is alive and bleeding
out there
on the border lands,
that half a chance
half coherent
on asphalt
a dead end street,
fighting to breathe,
waiting for me
to pick it up
and put it on its feet,
so we
can lean
on one another,
and limp
through the door
of brighter days.
